Italy: Airline, Rail, and Ferry Strikes

Airline, rail and ferry workers have strikes planned in the coming weeks that could affect transportation throughout the country. Delays in air traffic could occur at the following times and places: Jan. 19, nationwide strike by Alitalia workers; Jan. 22, all day ground workers’ strike at Verona’s airport; Jan. 30, air traffic controllers’ strike in Milan, noon to four, and day-long ground workers’ strike at Venice’s Marco Polo Airport. Rail service may be disrupted at the following times and places: Jan. 18-19, 24-hour rail workers’ strike in Abruzzo beginning at 9 p.m.; Jan. 25-26, 24-hour rail workers strike in Marche beginning at 9 p.m. Ferry service may be disrupted Jan. 18-19 at Messina, Sicily because of a 24-hour ferry workers’ strike beginning at 9 p.m.

Italy: Strikes to Affect Air Travel, Transit

Several strikes could disrupt travel in Italy this week. Air traffic controllers plan a nationwide four-hour strike the afternoon of Dec. 11. Strikes by rail and ferry workers could affect travel in and around Milan Dec. 14, Turin Dec. 14-15, and in Naples and between Sicily and the mainland Dec. 15. Public transit workers’ strikes could shut down bus service in Bologna Dec. 15 and in Florence Dec. 16.

Italy: Mt. Etna Eruption Disrupts Flights in Sicily

Sicily’s Mount Etna is spewing ash and caused authorities to close Fontanarossa airport from dusk to dawn for four straight nights Nov. 24-27. The airport remained open during the day because with adequate visibility, pilots can avoid ash-laden clouds. Some flights were canceled or diverted, but most operated on schedule.
