Best Way To Travel In Italy?

We are traveling to Catania, Sicily. We will probably fly Salt Lake City to Rome. Choices are to rent a car and drive, take a train to Naples and take the ferry to Messina. Anyone with a happy experience of how to get around Italy (southern) would be a big help. We want to travel southern Italy wine country, festivals if any (September/October), or just small villages.

We have family in the most southern point of Italy. I would not suggest renting a car. This way only causes arguments and problems no matter who you are. The train is the best way to go. You get more time to relax and enjoy the scenery around you plus no one has to do the driving. It can be confusing getting around but at the station people are nice and help you out. Plus depending on how long you were planning on having the car it saves you money!! WIN WIN.

Made a trip over there in september. The trains are very cheap and a great way to see italy. It does take a little planning but well worth the effort..
