Probably the best bet is to get a guide book like Rough Guides, Lonely Planet, Let’s Go Europe, Fodor’s or Frommer’s and check out the section on Sicily.
Another good source is to check out the New York Times vacation section. Go to nytimes.com and check out the travel section. Or check other large newspapers like the Washington Post or Chicago Tribune or the like.
In addition, search on Sicily trips. Look for places to stay, places to go, and then decide where you want to stay and what to see, get out a map, and decide how long you are going to stay, etc.
You might for instance find that you would like to stay a week in one place, and then four days in another. You might take side trips as well.
Airfare deals can be found all of the time. I suppose the cheapest place to fly into would be Rome, and then to Sicily. Sign up for the major airlines fare newsletters. I’ve gotten some great prices that way.
A travel agent isn’t that expensive and can really make planning easy. I used to use one all of the time, then alter my plans using Let’s Go Europe, which is geared for the college student-aged people.
I also find that the websites of the major airlines often have better fares than Expedia and Travelocity, but you have to shop around. Be prepared to jump on a great price when you see one!
Of course, you have to plan your itinerary first.
Oh, and be flexible when you get there. No reason to be stressed on vacation. Your husband is a lucky guy to have you do this for him! Bon Voyage!
Book your reservation through travel agency about a month or 2 before your departure. Airlines and cruises do the same way also.
